Planning for your Trip ~ Weather in Alaska
June Alaska Weather
June overall offers beautiful weather in the Anchorage area and across south-central Alaska. Typically temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees by day. With 24 hours of daylight for the entire month, it is a popular time for tourists to enjoy long days of being out and about. Although for the most part, June is considered part of the dry season in our area of Alaska, there is always the chance for scattered rain showers, especially near mountainous areas. When packing for your June trip, it is ideal to have a good blend of layered, light-weight packable clothing. This is pretty much what we suggest for June and the entire summer when visiting Alaska: Layer 1: Synthetic short or long-sleeve t-shirt; Layer 2: Synthetic or microfleece long-sleeve shirt Layer 3: Packable, waterproof rainshell. Note that morning temperatures in June can still be quite chilly and temps will be determined by your proximity to water and the elevation. A light pair of wool gloves and a light wool or synthetic stocking cap would be advised for anyone planning a fishing, camping or hiking trip. Also, for those on flightseeing trips in the plane to mountainous area are advised to dress warm as temperatures in the plane will change with altitude.
July Alaska Weather
The first half of July normally offers the warmest temperatures during the day throughout Alaska. Again, this is the norm, but be prepared for variable weather. As the month of July progresses, average high temperatures begin to drop from averages in the 70s to averages in the 60s. In late July, the chance for scattered showers by day does increase, so being prepared for a little rain every day will make your outdoor experience much more comfortable. Like June, for the most part July offers long days of daylight and is a very popular month for outdoor activities such as flight-seeing, hiking, glamping, float trips, fishing, etc.
August Alaska Weather
August is a dynamic month by weather standards here in Alaska We can reach the mid-70s on clear, sunny days, yet when coastal low pressure fronts arrive, daytime highs can dip down into the mid-50s. It is important to pack accordingly to assure you are dressed comfortably for weather swings. Mornings are quite cool at times, especially in the latter half of August and it's best that one is prepared for cool low temperatures. Now August is not necessarily a cold, bad-weather month by any means. We have had some of the most comfortable, extraordinary weather in August. It's just that during this time of year, considered "late summer" in Alaska, there is much variability and the weather can change quite dramatically overnight. As with all other months in Alaska, we encourage everyone to keep well-tuned to the local weather forecast to plan accordingly for their upcoming Alaskan adventure.
