We're proud to offer our special fly-in Alaska outpost cabins! There is nothing like these super-cool wilderness glamping destinations anywhere else in Alaska! The lake outpost cabins offer a place all your own, immersed in Alaska's remote nature. They are available in tandem with at least one night's stay at Wilderness Place Lodge, our flagship wilderness/fishing lodge.
What is an Outpost Cabin?
You can look far and wide, but you will find very few if any venues like this in remote Alaska! Outpost cabins are a very popular concept throughout Canada and in other regions and states that have expansive wilderness areas with room to explore. Outposts provide an upgraded alternative to camping, and are usually located on lakes or rivers that provide a variety of outdoor activities. The popular term for these accommodations is "glamping," which is the new norm in off-grid adventure travel accommodations. The cabins have all the spoils, with the exception of running water and plumbing. Drinking water is flown in and restroom facilities feature contained, scent-free dry flush toilets. Outpost cabins are full furnished and fully stocked with all the basics of a little home, so you are completely self-sufficient in the wilderness. Our Alaska outposts have many comfortable extras such as memory foam mattresses, alternative heat sources, an assortment of Alaska books, games, card tables, etc. The cabins are privately owned, available as fly-in vacation rentals to a set number of 2-4 guests. the Pioneer cabin is a historic, remodeled log cabin, whereas Solitude Island Retreat is a brand-new frame cabin with kitchenette and covered porch. Both cabins are accessed by float plane and are located approximately 20 minutes from one another in the heart of south central Alaska. Highlights of your stay at the outposts feature rafting, hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, restorative solitude, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, sketching, painting, reading and probably the best night's sleep you've had since forever! All of this in a place all your own in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness!
The Pioneer Cabin Wilderness Outpost
The Pioneer Cabin Outpost is an extremely unique wilderness destination. The cabin is a restored 1950s Alaska settler's log cabin on a small remote lake accessible only by float plane.
The property was initially a federal-patented gold claim dating back to 1934. The Pioneer Cabin in addition to a 2nd guest cabin, the "eagle's perch" collectively accommodate groups of 2-4 people. The kitchen within the Pioneer cabin is fully functional including the original kitchen appliances in mint-condition. Many unique features of the cabin reflect the time, age and lifestyle of the original settler. Relax with a glass of wine on the floating log dock, or while you cook dinner over our contained fireplace grill. The icing on the cake is a trail out the back yard of the cabin leads a short distance to a a blue-ribbon trout and salmon river. Here you can wade-fish for 5 salmon species, rainbow trout and arctic grayling. The property features a wooded, diverse lake parcel featuring many wildflowers and berry bushes. Hike down the trail to the scenic reflection pond surrounded by muskeg marsh where we view dozens of species of native birds and other wildlife.

Pioneer cabin outpost trips are fully guided, outfitted and catered. You personal guide orients you to the cabin, caters to your needs, provides for security and orients you to the river, hiking trail and fishing. Guides provide all needed fishing gear, tackle, flies and assistance as desired by you. Your guide resides in a separate cabin just down the lake's edge, out of site of the Pioneer cabin to assure your privacy and solitude. All food and beverages are provide for your stay. Most of our guests prefer to grill their own meals over the fire, or on the propane grill on the cabin's front porch. There is a full gas range in the main kitchen as well and a portable Jet Boil for boiling water for cooking, coffee or tea. We include a limited selection of beer/wine/soda paired to the preference of each guest.
Located near the dock, there are kayaks and a two-person canoe available for exploring the lake. The lake temperature mid-summer is ideal for swimming! Lots of wildlife abounds in the area such as moose, loons, otters, beavers and a huge diversity of birds for the birding enthusiast. Blueberry picking is available right behind the cabin in mid to late summer. Enjoy each day here as you please and at your own pace. On the final day following breakfast, your guide will float you by raft downstream to the main lodge with many stops to fish and enjoy a shore lunch. Solitude Island Retreat
Solitude Island Retreat is a small, modern cabin ideal for a one-of-a-kind couple's and family retreat in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness. The cabin is set up above a beautiful lake looking southward to the mountain range. The cabin is located on a private 4-acre island in the center of the lake with scenic views in all directions. Solitude says it all. This place is the perfect place for those that need a few days to unplug and restore themselves. This destination is a true private vacation rental. Your access is by float plane and the flight in is a phenomenal experience in and of itself! It is a DIY experience, so you're literally by yourselves in your private cabin, on a private island in Alaska! Pinch me, please! Yes, it's truly one-of-a-kind, designed for unique people that enjoy the introverted experience of immersion in nature. The cabin has 3 kayaks and a row boat for exploring the lake. Loons are prevalent as are trumpeter swans, a variety of ducks, nesting swallows, shorebirds, beavers, otters and a good population of moose! There are northern pike in the lake and fishing gear provided. Wildlife, nature and wildflower photography are a favorite past time for all of the guests of Solitude Island.
The cabin is fully stocked with basic kitchen appliances, plates and cutlery, coffee/tea, beverage mixes, snacks, condiments, etc. All meals and beverages for your stay here are fully catered! We provide a menu-planning guide prior to your trip so you can have some feedback as to what is packed for your trip. All perishable food is packed for you and transported in Yeti-brand, soft-sided coolers. There is a small Jetboil brand portable camp stove inside the cabin, and a large double-burner range outside on the covered porch for cooking.
The cabin does have electricity, powered by a small portable generator on site. This allows use of a small microwave in the kitchen. An electric wall heater is available to take the chill out as needed. Upstairs you will find the cozy sleeping loft with memory foam queen and twin bed. The cabin is ideal for a couple, or a couple with 2 children. The cabin is small, but well thought out with all the features of the most exotic tiny house! We know you will love this slice of heaven and we know you will want to come back again and again! The giant floating float-plane dock is an awesome feature and is our favorite place for sitting lake-level, watching the loons and enjoying a sun-downer! The dock is perfect size for sunbathing, doing yoga or having a lakeside picnic. Take a dip in the lake mid-afternoon to clean off and unwind. The water in this beautiful lake is much warmer than you would expect. Relax and enjoy the Solitude!
